Resolve to be ready! US Postal changes in January affect customer bill mailings

For utilities that print and mail its own customer bills, the US Post Office is making some changes next month that will affect your mailing rates if you’re not prepared.

As of January 27, 2013, all mailings, including customer bills, MUST use the Intelligent Mail barcode to take advantage of automation discounts – this includes letters, postcards and flat-sized mail pieces.

The Postnet barcodes no longer will be eligible for automation discounts as of Jan. 28, 2013.

The Postnet barcodes no longer will be eligible for automation discounts as of Jan. 28, 2013.

The Intelligent Mail barcode is technology that the US Post Office uses to sort and track letters. Organizations that take advantage of using this barcode receive a discount on their mailings.

By transitioning to the Intelligent Mail barcode now, you can continue to benefit from automation prices and set the foundation to participate in the Intelligent Mail Full-Service option. The Full-Service option provides you with the lowest automation discount prices, free address correction for Full-Service mail pieces, and visibility into your mailing.

ASI has been working closely with the US Post Office and its utility clients to ensure a smooth transition to the Intelligent Mailing barcode. If you would like support with the Intelligent Mailing barcode for your customer billing, please contact us.
